International Links
Astor College has built up extremely strong international links over the past 20 years. Many staff have International experience and International aspects feature on many departmental curricula. Astor College has held the schools International award since 2005. Much of our work is funded by Comenius and Jules Verne projects.
Our link with the Lycée Pierre de Coubertin in Calais has been a close one for the past 20 years. Major projects have included Dance workshops, Art exhibitions, joint musical productions, sports fixtures, workshops, business and work experience links.
We have two links with the U.S.A. Our first link with Carlinville Illinois is a remarkable one in which we offer teachers / students in service training programmes. Our second link is with New Kent County Virginia which has resulted in joint musical productions staged in both Dover and New Kent County, recent productions include Jesus Christ Superstar and Cabaret.
We have had an extraordinary link with the closed town of Zheleznogorsk in Siberia Russia. Following a Kent County Council management contract, the Chief Executive Officer was asked to go to Siberia to visit schools and talk to educational officials. This was a great honour and experience as he was one of the few foreigners to be allowed in this centre for the Russian Space and Rocket programmes. Since that time a strong link has been forged with school number 96. Astor College features highly in the Russian experience and regular musical exchanges have taken place in the last 10 years.
We link annually with the St Josef’s Institute Torhout. Belgian students have performed Private Peaceful to college audiences and have brought with them a traditional Belgium market. Astor drama students regularly perform their current musical to Belgium audiences.
An exciting link has been forged with the Anadolu Lisesi School in Köyceğiz, Turkey. English students have already travelled to Turkey to study the conservation and protection of the liquid amber trees and the leather back turtles. Turkish students have visited England to look at conservation of the White Cliffs, including local flora and fauna. Astor students return to Turkey next March to study the role of women in society. We were delighted that the Head of the Turkish school and the Director of education were able to visit Astor College to experience a different education system. Mr Pallant will return to Turkey in March.
Through Comenius funding teachers and students are taking part in an exciting project with six other European Countries. The History / English project on the theme of great historical events and personalities will take students to Bulgaria, Estonia, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Italy and Spain over the next two years. The project starts November 2012.
A recent link with Andalucía and Spain explored good practice between Dover and Andalucía in easing the transition between primary and secondary schools through the close investigation of the common feeling amongst parents, teachers and students.
This rich diet of international experience greatly enhances our students’ education. It also gives them an invaluable insight into other cultures.
